BAW History

Beijing Automobile Works was founded in 1953 as The First Accessory Factory and was renamed to Beijing Automobile Works in 1958. In 1987 the company merged with Beijing Motorcycle Company to become the Automobile and Motorcycle United Company (BAM).
The modern company, Beijing Automobile Works Co.,Ltd (BAW), was founded in 2001 and incorporates the original Beijing Automobile Works, as well as the first Chinese automobile joint venture Beijing Jeep, Beijing Automobile Assembly and Foton Motor.
In 2010, BAW became a subsidiary of Beijing Automotive Group(BAIC).
In May 2020, BAIC Group sold its stake of BAW to Qingdao Fulu Investment Holding Group, a private company specializes in producing low-speed electric vehicle. BAW was officially disengaging from BAIC Group and transitioning from a state-owned enterprise to a private enterprise. The headquater of BAW was moved from Bejing to Qingdao, Shandong.
In April 2023, BAW was acquired by Shandong Weiqiao Pioneering Group, a private company active in the textiles and aluminium industry.

Company profile

Beijing Automobile Works was established in 1951, and its name was inscribed by Marshal Zhu De himself in 1958. It is the second large-scale automobile manufacturing enterprise in New China, the pioneer of China’s automobile industry and the cradle of Beijing’s automobile industry. 

In 1951, under the order of the Central Military Commission, it developed the first motorcycle in China; in 1958, it independently developed the first car in Beijing, and drove it into Zhongnanhai, where it was inspected and praised by Chairman Mao and other party and state leaders; in 1963 Developed China’s first light off-road vehicle——BJ210; BJ212 came out in 1965 and was officially installed in the army.
So far, it has produced more than 2 million vehicles, creating a legend in the sales of single products in the Chinese auto industry and becoming a well-deserved Chinese god car; 1983 In 2007, he established China’s first Sino-foreign joint venture automobile enterprise with an American automobile company; in 2007, he developed the second-generation military vehicle – Warrior, and completed the commissioning task in 7 years.

In 2020, the company will move its headquarters from Beijing to Qingdao, becoming the only company in Shandong Province with off-road vehicles (including new energy), cars (including new energy), trucks (including new energy), buses (including new energy), military vehicles, and modified vehicles It is a full-qualified vehicle manufacturing enterprise, which fills the gap in Shandong’s automobile industry and is also the first first-line brand vehicle manufacturing headquarters in Qingdao’s history. 

At present, the company has four production bases in Qingdao, Dezhou, Linyi, and Huanghua, as well as a Beijing work department, with an annual production capacity of 450,000 complete vehicles. It currently has 5,000 employees, including 2,000 in Qingdao base.
By the end of 2022, the total number of employees will exceed 1. million people.
